Essays taken from a weekly newspaper column published in the Washington County News, Washington, Kansas. Look for my book, "Dispatches From Kansas," available from Amazon.com, or from the author.
These are beautifully done Tom. Poetry blended with sports photography. How are you lighting these? Radio-controlled flashes in the rafters, normal ambient light in the gym? Whatever you're doing it works.
Dave -- Thanks. The lighting in the Washington County High School gym was phenomenally good, much more so than most gyms. For most of my shots I added one-third stop exposure and shot at ISO 6400. My favorite of the evening was the lower image, which looks even better in monochrome. I hate to see the season end which I was just getting in the groove of the fast action and crappy light.
I love the expressiveness of the hands. They're ballet-like, especially the third photo down.
The final shot's terrific. I do like the color more than the black and white - just a preference. There's so much detail it seems to get lost in the b&w. But then, that could be my bad eyes ;-)
Linda -- I like the black and whites but admit to doing it because I was firing off monochromes for the paper and decided to add those to my website to save a step or two. At 0100 I was exhausted and still had to go to my other job before bedtime, so I didn't bother to switch. Still, I like the monochromes. Hell, I can't decided any more. I'm a mess...
