Essays taken from a weekly newspaper column published in the Washington County News, Washington, Kansas. Look for my book, "Dispatches From Kansas," available from Amazon.com, or from the author.
I'm having trouble remembering the name of that first flower, probably because I can't remember exactly what the flower itself looks like. I love the seed pods from this plant, though. I have bunches of them in old, glass bottles on my kitchen hearth. I also love how you desaturated that photo, leaving just enough of the color. All of these are beautiful.
Jenni -- The first flower is a really nasty weed--velvetweed! It's a beautiful flower and the leaves are velvety soft. Unfortunately, it also takes over, has deep roots, and becomes a problem harder to deal with than the economy. And even though my neighbors will think I've gone daffy, I have to admit I kinda like the damn thing.
